First Graders were treated to a book reading from former Kolter student, Lisa Barbernell-Pliner. Her book is titled "A Puppy's dream comes true; babydoll's adventures".
2013 - 2014
Kolter again hosted author and illustrator Vuthy Kuon. The children enjoyed hearing him read his first story published, “Humpty Dumpty After the Fall”. They also enjoyed watching him draw a new Humpty.
2012 - 2013 Author, Betty Birney visited with Kolter Elementary
Second through Fifth graders had a great time listening to our visiting author, Betty Birney, discuss how as a girl of seven she wrote her first book (called Teddy Bear in the Woods), how she came to write stories about a hamster and how she decided on a name for him. She also shared with the students her career path from writing cartoons for Disney to writer and story editor of animated episodes for TV shows as Fraggle Rock, Welcome toPooh Corner, Madeline, Doug, and Bobby’s World to name a few. Teachers and students all enjoyed her.
Coach Ryan Sloth, Iowa children's author and former Iowa State University and Iowa Barnstormers football player visited Kolter on February 7 to talk to 2nd and 3rd graders about his sports career and his success as an author. He also talked to the students about the many characters in his book who are named for people in his life. He read two of his books of which the students immensely enjoyed. Coach Ryan also showed the students some of his football paraphernalia and his jerseys worn at Iowa State and as an Iowa Barnstormer football player. After the readings Coach Ryan autographed their purchased books.
